The CHANGE Challenge was a transformative experience that equipped me with essential skills and knowledge for a successful research career. One of the most valuable lessons I learned was the importance of clear, specific objectives in a research proposal, which is crucial for structuring focused and impactful research goals. I also gained a deeper understanding of various implementation research theories and models, invaluable knowledge for designing and evaluating effective and sustainable interventions. This challenge highlighted the importance of teamwork in research. Collaboration is essential to achieve meaningful outcomes and build a supportive research environment. I was privileged to work with excellent mentors who provided invaluable guidance and support, helping me hone my research skills and gain a clearer understanding of the academic landscape. I hope to continue keeping in touch with my mentors and seeking their advice. In addition, I learned the importance of writing consistently as a tool for professional growth and securing grants. I am committed to collaborating with innovative and like-minded researchers to advance impactful projects, as well as building a strong team and supporting junior researchers. I believe I can share the knowledge I have gained and contribute to nurturing the next generation of researchers.

One of the deepest insights I gained during this challenge is that grant writing is a skill that can be learned and perfected over time. Through consistent writing, reviews, and feedbacks, anyone can be successful in obtaining a grant. It is heartening to know that organizations like the NIH are willing to fund researchers who meet their criteria, making this process seem less daunting and more feasible. I have also come to understand the importance of cultural context when implementing health interventions. Each culture has its own values and perspectives, and understanding these is essential to develop effective interventions in a respectful manner. No culture is inherently superior to another, just as a “bouquet of flower” is not superior to a “pot of soup”.

My advice to future CHANGE Fellows is to embrace a continuous learning process, especially when writing grant proposals. Think of it as a skill that improves with practice. Write regularly, ask for feedback, and learn from reviews. With perseverance, you can be successful in obtaining research funding. Work intensively with your mentor and research peers, as collaboration is key to growth. Build relationships with like-minded people, take on leadership roles when necessary, and don’t be afraid to mentor younger researchers. Finally, always consider the cultural context in which you are working. Understanding and respecting the unique perspectives of each community will help develop effective and culturally appropriate interventions.
