Introducing our third place winner of the Angie Courage Award- Femme Health
At FemmeHealth, our mission to empower women extends to the fight against cancer—a battle that impacts countless lives and families. Partnering with We the Women, a passionate nonprofit championing women’s health and equity, we have leveraged digital platforms to drive awareness, prevention, and stigma reduction across Nigeria.
Cancer has long been a whispered fear among women in our communities, shrouded by stigma and misinformation. This silence has cost lives. Together with We the Women, we resolved to break this cycle through digital innovation and online community engagement.
One of our most impactful campaigns, “Know Her, Save Her”, harnessed the power of social media to educate women about breast and cervical cancer prevention. Through Instagram Lives, Graphics and reels, we demonstrated self-examination techniques, shared stories of early detection saving lives, and encouraged routine screenings. To make access easier, we collaborated with online health services that provide subsidized Pap smears and mammograms, enabling women to book appointments directly through digital links.
These virtual events weren’t just about imparting knowledge; they built a safe online space where women could engage openly. Viewers from diverse backgrounds shared personal stories of courage and loss in the comments, fostering a supportive community that helped dismantle the stigma surrounding cancer diagnoses. Many participants admitted they had never discussed such topics even within their families before joining our digital sessions.
Stigma reduction was further emphasized during our “Pinktober” campaign, which celebrated survivors as ambassadors of hope. Through our partner’s Instagram platform, we hosted live survivor stories, bringing their journeys to thousands of viewers. This digital campaign created a ripple effect of awareness, normalizing conversations about cancer and dispelling harmful myths.
Reaching young women in their late teens and early 20s, we launched the vaccine campaigns also. This campaign encouraged HPV vaccination as a critical step in cancer prevention. With the help of interactive Q&A sessions and Instagram polls, we addressed concerns and busted myths about the vaccine. The campaign linked participants to online scheduling tools for nearby clinics.
At FemmeHealth, our digital-first approach ensures that no woman, regardless of location or background, is left behind. From accessible resources to vibrant online communities, our initiatives are rooted in empathy and innovation.
Together with We the Women, we envision a future where stigma no longer silences conversations, where every woman has access to life-saving prevention tools, and where communities—both online and offline—come together to save lives. This is the heartbeat of our mission: empowering women, fighting for equity, and standing united against cancer. One click, one story, and one life at a time.
