HBV Contest Guidelines

4 communities by communities in partnership with 4 mothers and babies, are calling for submissions in response to the question:

How might we promote birth-dose hepatitis B vaccination for newborns in Nigeria?

THE PROBLEM

Every minute, two people die from hepatitis-related liver diseases. Much of this death is attributable to the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Mother-to-child transmission of HBV is responsible for a substantial number of liver cancer deaths because infants infected at birth develop more severe manifestations of liver disease as adults. A hepatitis B vaccine initiated within 24 hours of birth, followed by three additional pentavalent HBV vaccines (at six, 10, and 14 weeks after birth), provide durable immunity, substantially decreasing the risk of HBV and liver cancer. Yet only 1 in 2 Nigerian children received a hepatitis B vaccine in 2019, and coverage within 24 hours of birth is at a 20-33%. We can change this!

OUR MISSION

We believe that mothers, their babies and family contexts can become empowered to end hepatitis-related liver cancer in Nigeria. We seek fresh and dynamic voices and experiences of mothers and their families (i.e. husbands, parents, siblings, inlaws) as a unit, to collaborate as a team to identify ways to promote HepB-BD for their babies within 24 hours of birth, followed by three additional pentavalent HBV vaccines (at six, 10, and 14 weeks after birth).  We can be the change that inspires actions.

OUR PROCESS

4 communities by communities in partnership with 4 mothers and babies, advances community needs and priorities through four participatory approaches designed to spark the urgency of now. We are a community transformational platform that helps communities to unleash their potential, while inspiring and supporting them to harness their collective power for change.

THE SOLUTION

We are calling all mothers and their family units (i.e. husband, parents, siblings, inlaws etc.) to enter as a team, and submit their responses to the contest question:

How might we promote birth-dose hepatitis B vaccination for newborns in Nigeria?

The final deadline for submissions is March 17th, 2024.
