4 communities by communities is calling for submissions in response to the question:
The final deadline for submissions is April 15, 2025.
Nigerians are at the epicenter of an expanding cancer crisis, with the largest number of cancer cases and deaths in Africa. Evidence-based cancer control interventions for cervical and liver cancer exist but are often out of reach for many communities in Nigeria, thus leading to devastating impact for many people and communities globally. The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination prevents cervical, oral, penile, vaginal, and vulvar cancers; the hepatitis B (HBV) vaccine prevents liver cancer. Yet, the dissemination and implementation of these vaccines to prevent cervical and liver cancers has been incomplete. We can change this!
The Change Prize is on a mission to end cancer in Nigeria. We need radically diverse group of leaders who can lead by example, awaken the potential within us, and inspire more action, more change for communities in Nigeria. For us to be successful, we are looking for early career investigators (Post-doctoral Scholars, Lecturers 1 & 2, Senior Lecturers, or Associate Professors within 5 years of receiving their advanced degrees) who are prepared to lead change. The winning team will have the opportunity to receive substantial funding and conduct their proposed work, grant, or interventions, in partnership with 4 communities by communities, coaches, and/or partners.
We are committed to empowering communities to fuel real change and innovation to fight cervical and liver cancer. These transformative solutions are possible when community assets meet opportunities. We built this open community model to solve these complex health problems with rather than for communities.
We are calling early career investigators (Post-doctoral Scholars, Lecturers 1 & 2, Senior Lecturers, or Associate Professors), within five years of receiving their advanced postgraduate degree (MD and/or PhD), to enter as a team, and submit their responses to the contest question
How can communities and community-based organizations increase and sustain the uptake of vaccines for preventable cancers in Nigeria?
The final deadline for submissions is April 15th, 2025.
Submit your proposal: To submit your proposal go to our google drive platform and complete the application form. Please read the guidance document which will ensure that you provide the required information. The deadline for submitting a proposal is midnight on April 15th, 2025.
Judging Criteria: Entries that are responsive and comply with the entry requirements will be scored by a panel of judges using the following criteria below:
Executive Summary (20%): Does the executive summary (Specific Aims) provide an overview of the proposal and research directions. Is the knowledge gap and the importance of filling it, the central hypothesis and the aims that will address it, and the overall impact of the work relevant, rigorous, reasonable and practical.
Significance (20%): The significance of the existing and proposed research in addressing a set of specific problems related to the cervical or liver cancer in Nigeria. The estimated public health benefit of the research, the reach to the population that would benefit is high
Innovation (20%): To what extent do the proposed data push forward the state of the field and present novel insights and directions for further research? This may include novelty and originality of the research, including new concepts, approaches, or perspectives and/or extension of existing gaps in knowledge.
Feasibility and rigor (20%): How feasible is the data collection proposed? Do they demonstrate an understanding of dissemination and implementation science principles using relevant methods that are rigorous and practical. Are the study design, data collection, and analysis proposed feasible, particularly when conducted in community settings. To what extent do the proposed demonstrate potential for impact, scalability, sustainability, and/or spread to a broader context of population. The potential research should be translatable in real-world communities.
Team (10%): Is there information about the team, including members’ roles and expertise with respect to the submission. For example, this may include information about a team member’s role on the project, job title, career stage, institutional affiliation and relevant education, training, and professional or personal experiences. How well positioned is the team to successfully complete the proposed approach?
Communication Clarity (10%): Clarity and effectiveness of how the research has been communicated in the submission process
